Set in a future in which robots have progressed to the point of autonomy and become a point of significant political and social contention, Astro Boy (1980) chronicles the experiences of a young crime-fighting robot named Atom. Created in the image of the deceased son of his mysterious father, Atom survives rough beginnings, being rescued by the benevolent Dr. Ochanomizu and adopted. Atom finds himself in the middle of several conflicts with different forces in his search of justice, and is frequently confronted by the harsh realities of the universe.

Mankind has migrated to the stars, meeting numerous alien civilizations, which are now long dead. Upon finding the archeological remnants of such a civilization on the planet Solo, mankind ends up having its first contact with a living alien species: the Buff Clan. The Buff Clan launches a vicious attack on the colony when Karala Ajiba, the daughter of the Buff Clan's military chief, sets foot on Solo's land.Cosmo Yuki, Kasha Imhof, and Bes Jordan climb aboard three trucks to escape, which will soon turn into the giant humanoid robot Ideon.
When the Lone settlement is destroyed, the survivors board a newly discovered spaceship and run, seeking to escape the aliens and eventually find peace. Nonetheless, the stubborn Buff Clan is always in hot pursuit and will not give up too easily.
